Your Questions Answered

We're here to help

We understand that starting pregnancy, post natal and pelvic health care can feel overwhelming. Here are answers to common questions about pregnancy and post natal physiotherapy.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No referral is required. You can book directly with our Women’s and Pelvic Health Physiotherapists at any stage of pregnancy or during your postnatal recovery.

When should I see a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist during Pregnancy?

You can see a pelvic health physiotherapist at any stage of pregnancy. Many women attend for pelvic floor assessments, pelvic or back pain, birth preparation, exercise guidance, and postnatal recovery support.

We recommend booking an appointment as soon as you begin to experience pain, discomfort, or pelvic floor concerns, as early intervention can help you feel better sooner.

Pelvic floor assessments can be incredibly valuable throughout pregnancy. They help you learn how to correctly contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles before birth, improving awareness, connection, and confidence.

Assessment during pregnancy can also help identify muscle tone, tension, and individual risk factors for pelvic floor trauma or tearing during birth. We can provide guidance to support labour and birth preparation, including strategies to improve comfort, pelvic floor relaxation, and pushing mechanics during the second stage of labour.

Can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy help if I’m leaking or experiencing pelvic pain?

Yes. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help with bladder leakage, pelvic pain, heaviness, prolapse symptoms and pelvic floor dysfunction during pregnancy and after birth.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your appointment includes a comprehensive assessment, discussion of your symptoms and goals, education and an individualised treatment plan tailored to your pregnancy or recovery journey.

Is an internal pelvic floor assessment required?

Not always. Internal assessments are optional and only performed with your consent when clinically appropriate. External assessment and education options are also available.

Can I attend after a caesarean birth?

Absolutely. We provide support for caesarean recovery including scar management, abdominal rehabilitation, return to exercise and recovery guidance.

When can I safely return to exercise after having a baby?

This varies for every person. We help guide your recovery and provide tailored advice on safe return to walking, gym, running, lifting and higher impact exercise.

Do you help with birth preparation?

Yes. We provide education around pelvic floor relaxation, breathing strategies, labour positions, pushing techniques and preparing your body for birth.

Can I bring my baby to the appointment?

Of course. Babies are always welcome at our clinic and we absolutely love having babies and cuddles! We understand the realities of pregnancy and postpartum life and we are very accomodating.

Do you offer private health rebates?

Yes. Private health rebates are available depending on your level of cover, we are covered under Physiotherapy.
